How Google reviews affect local SEO (and what to do about it)
Reviews aren't just customer opinions — they're one of the most important ranking signals in Google Maps. Here's exactly how they influence your local ranking.

When someone searches "emergency plumber near me" or "best Italian restaurant downtown," Google doesn't show results at random. There's an algorithm behind that decision, and it's one you can influence.
Reviews are one of the most important inputs into that algorithm. Not the only one — but one of the few you can actively work on.
The three factors Google uses for local rankings
Google's own documentation explains that local ranking is based on three main criteria:
Relevance: how well your business matches what the user is searching for. This depends on how complete your profile is, which categories you've chosen, and what words appear in your description and in your reviews.
Distance: how close your business is to the user or the location they searched for. You can't control this.
Prominence: how well-known and well-regarded your business is online. This is where reviews carry significant weight.
Reviews primarily affect prominence, but they also influence relevance through the words customers use when writing them.
The five review signals Google measures
Not all reviews carry the same weight. Google analyzes several dimensions:
1. Total review count
More reviews signal more activity and more trust. A business with 200 reviews carries more authority than one with 15, even if both have similar average ratings.
2. Average rating
This affects ranking indirectly. A high average rating increases CTR (more people click on your listing), and Google treats higher CTR as a positive signal. Google Maps filters also let users search only for 4+ star businesses, which automatically excludes lower-rated profiles.
3. Review velocity
Google favors profiles that receive reviews at a consistent pace over those that get a burst of reviews and then go quiet. Five reviews a month for a year is worth more than 60 reviews in January and nothing for the rest of the year.
4. Recency
Recent reviews carry more weight than old ones. A review from three years ago has a fraction of the impact of one from three weeks ago. Maintaining a steady flow matters more than having had a lot of activity in the past.
5. Owner responses
Google recognizes responding to reviews as a signal of an active, engaged business. It's not the most powerful ranking factor on its own, but it contributes to the overall health of your profile and can naturally include relevant keywords in the responses.
How the words in reviews affect your relevance
This is one of the least-known aspects of local SEO: Google reads the text of your customer reviews.
If multiple customers mention "best breakfast spot in the financial district" or "affordable plumber who shows up on time," Google understands that your business is relevant for someone searching for exactly that. You can't write those reviews yourself, but you can influence what customers say.
How? Be specific when you ask for the review:
"If you can, mention what service we did for you and roughly where you're based. It really helps when people search for us."
That's not manipulation. It's giving customers helpful guidance that makes their review more useful for both of you.
When responding to reviews, you can also naturally include relevant keywords:
"We're so glad you enjoyed your experience at our downtown location. Looking forward to seeing you again!"
Google indexes those responses. Each well-written reply is a small opportunity to reinforce your relevance for specific searches.
The impact on the local map pack (the top 3 map results)
The local map pack — the three businesses that appear highlighted on the map in local searches — captures 44% of all clicks in local search results. Being in that pack or not can be the single biggest factor in whether potential customers find you.
Reviews aren't the only factor for ranking in the map pack, but they're among the most actionable. Whitespark's annual local search ranking factors survey consistently places review signals (quantity, rating, velocity, and keyword content) among the top five factors for map pack ranking.
In markets with low local competition, 30-50 well-managed reviews can be enough to break into the top 3. In large cities with competitive sectors, the threshold is considerably higher — but the principles remain the same.
What to actually do with this information
Translated into concrete actions:
Ask for reviews systematically. Occasionally asking doesn't cut it. You need a process that generates reviews month after month, consistently. Check out these ready-to-use review request templates to get started.
Always respond — especially to negative ones. A thoughtful response to a negative review can have more impact than ten responses to positive ones. 45% of users say they're more likely to visit a business after seeing the owner respond to critical reviews.
Protect your recency. If you've gone months without new reviews, restart the process. A period of inactivity can cost you positions in the map.
Complete your profile. Reviews are important, but relevance also depends on having your category, hours, services, and description properly filled out. Reviews amplify a well-built profile — they don't compensate for a neglected one.
Reviews as a real competitive advantage
In many local markets, review management remains a blind spot for most businesses. Competitors with similar products or services aren't asking for reviews, aren't responding, and are leaving that ground open.
Starting a consistent review acquisition and management process now can move you ahead of businesses that have been around longer — simply because you're working on it and they aren't.
